It’s really quite ridiculous how much more I have to post about our road trip, which was now over a month and a half ago! Here are the top ten things I ate during our two months over there. Honorable mention goes to my friend Henry’s Portuguese fast food sandwich filled with chourico, pimenta salgada and french fries. I took a terrible photo of it so you can just go over to his website and see it there for yourself. I can’t think about that sandwich (or anything else on this list) without almost fainting in hunger. I like food a lot, ok?
10. Artichoke pizza, from Artichoke Basille’s Pizza, New York, NY.
Jason and I shared this enormous slice of white-sauced pizza at the 100% awesome Highline Park.

9. Tacos from random truck in the Mission, San Francisco, CA.
Crazy spicy, tangy and fresh. I had great tacos in L.A. and Austin but these were the only ones that blew me away.

8. Red velvet shake from Holy Cacao, Austin, TX.
Best shake I’ve ever had.

7. Donuts with both fried chicken, and bacon and maple icing from Gourdough’s, Austin, TX.
I don’t know what to say about these freak-of-nature donuts except that you should EAT THEM.

6. Tomato and feta pie, Kerbey Lane Cafe, Austin, TX.
This was my birthday lunch. Lord do I love tomato pie!

5. BBQ with creamed corn and pudding at Rudy’s, Austin, TX.
I’m not usually a big meat fan, so I wasn’t particularly excited about heading to Rudy’s. I should have been! Best meat I have ever had and an awesome experience in general.

4. Biscuits and gravy with hash browns at Ted’s Bulletin, Washington D.C.
This was actually what Jason ordered. I was so jealous. NZers are always comparing biscuits to scones but these were a world apart.

3. Breakfast at Bouchon, Las Vegas, NV
Um, look at it.

2. Deep fried stuffed avocado at the Hula Hut, Austin, TX
Crumbed and fried whole avocado filled with chicken and cheese, I would never have imagined this would be so amazing. I’m determined to recreate it.

1. Rainbow cake from Sweetiepie, New York, NY.
I usually prefer savoury to sweet but there was no way this cake couldn’t be number one, it was delicious and I’ve wanted rainbow cake since forever. It took me to my happy place.

holy crap Kate!!!!
Holy CRAP
I appreciate the mention Kate, but it’s not necessary. I’m a home cook and food hobbyist I know I can’t compare with the length and breadth of America. I do appreciate your diplomacy but recognize a bone when I’m being throw it! Arf! ARF! : ) Thanks for the mention and of course you are always welcome here.
Big love – Henry, Michelle, Sadie and Lilah!
Don’t be a dick Henry, I dream of that sandwich! Next time we visit I want it at least 3 times.
I love this post – such deliciousness.
my mouth is drooling!!
i’m curious about the avocado dish, it sounds really interesting.
Now I’m fainting with hunger! Especially over that artichoke cheesy pizza, and the deep fried avocado – WTF?!
I’m not trying to be a dick Kate, I just don’t think my Joao Grande is within 11 places of Thomas Keller’s “Bouchon”. He’d be very upset Kate.
Oh my goodness I’m drooling now. The artichoke pizza looks to die for!
I agree with, “HOLY CRAP”!!
i’ve wondered why there is a line outside of artichoke so often, now that i see that pizza i can see why. next time i will brave the wait!
umm wow…I am so glad it is my lunch break right now, cause I just became incredibly hungry! I really want the pizza and the chicken donuts?!…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Ain’t a bone Henry! Those sandwiches made my top ten. Pimento Salgada is something I need to strive for, and there’s little I like more than fries done right – fries done right with great jus is so good I can’t even think how to describe it.
P.S. Even if Keller were upset, I’m pretty sure Bourdain would be down with it.
Point well made and taken Jason. Thank you Kate and Jason.
As far as fries go, we chased good fries for a long time. I followed the Balthazar and others instructions for overnight soaks and double frying. Then we realized the local Portuguese places had the fries we like the best, so we bought precut Portuguese fries made from Portuguese potatoes and just fried them like our parents did.
Pimenta salgada is easy enough to make if you have to. Luckily, we don’t have to. We use it in many things, but it always shines best in sandwiches.
Oh goodness, it looks like you had a food adventure! I’ve been to all the places you mentioned in Austin (having lived there awhile ago) That rainbow cake looks ridiculously delicious as do those tacos!

You missed one thing Henry, I’ve never had amazing fries without them being cooked in Peanut oil. It makes all the difference when I make my own fries too. I’ve got my mum growing some peppers to make some pimenta salgada soon. I wish there were a Portuguese community here in Wellington.
Uh,looks good! Suddenly i got very hungry=)
I WANT RAINBOW CAKE!! nom nom nom
