I had a wonderful few days in Auckland this week. Hanging with my parents, catching up with old friends, cooking for twelve, eating my way across the city, feeding red pandas (again!) and going behind the scenes at the zoo.

Hi Sarah, it is at Auckland zoo. We had a friend who’s a keeper organise it for us. I thought you could do an animal encounter where you pay to meet the red pandas, but I just looked it up on their website and it seems you can’t! But it is possible to do a red panda encounter in Wellington. When we did ours they were not shy and all and lept right into our laps! Would definitely recommend doing the encounter if you’re ever in Wellington.

Thanks Delaney, it did go well!

this is so funny! I was just telling the kids during my program at the Philly Zoo today–when looking at our male red panda and telling them that they couldn’t pet him–that I knew of someone in NZ who got to hang out w/red pandas at the zoo! tooooooo funny…and lucky you!

  9. Megan says:

OH! and have you seen these pencils?

  10. Kate says:

Megan – those pencils are TOO CUTE! I’m super lucky – my zoo friend had organised a panda feeding for our other friend and I just happened to be in their city that weekend so got to join in! You’ll have to come to NZ someday so you can feed the pandas too. :D
By the way we aren’t gonna be in Philly but we’ll be in NY for 4 days and Washington for 2 – hopefully it’ll work out so we’ll be able to meet up.

  13. Sarah says:

Thanks for letting me know! Yeah I tried to hunt it down on the Auckland Zoo website to no avail. Guess I’ll have to make another trip down to Wellington! Have never been to the zoo there either, so should be worth while.

I was inspired by your list and made my own list of 25 things to do before i turn 25..I feel quite happy ( its my birthday next week). Thank you for the idea it’s a slightly daunting birthday and i feel a little in more comfortable with it. (distracted maybe)

I’m so jealous! I think last time I read about your red panda experience I looked it up for Auckland Zoo in hopes of treating me and my hubby for our wedding anniversary. But they don’t offer it. Can you get your friend to please beg the zoo to offer it? We adore those red pandas so much!
